About This Project
In 2016, a family of five purchased a 7-acre wooded lot on the outskirts of Des Moines with a dream to build a home-base for extended family. Enamored by the sunsets over the pond, the variety of flora, and the abundance of wildlife, they became certain that they wanted to preserve much of the lot for hiking trails and animal habitat, and to create a home that took advantage of the existing topography and views.
As for the aesthetic, they were interested in a shingle-style house, reminiscent of traditional summer homes along the New England coast or northern lake region, but in a vernacular that fit the extremes of the central Iowa climate, with systems and amenities fitting a modern, sustainable home. In 2021, they asked Iowa native Hannah Robertson to help fuse these ideas and bring the project to life.
The house will be two stories: a main level on grade with the driveway, and a lower walk-out level with full height windows and access to terraced lawns, gardens, and patios. On the main level, the great room, library, dining and kitchen are positioned to receive the greatest natural light and views over the existing pond and between the existing tree line. The back entry, primary and guest suites are located on the wooded side of the house for added privacy.
All spaces will be unified by a refined palette of natural materials, including rift sawn white oak, creamy honed marble and plastered walls. Bronze-colored windows, doors and siding contrast with the predominantly light stucco and limestone façade and mixed metal details carry throughout the interior and exterior. The result is a cohesive design anchored to the unique qualities of the site and imbued with timeless elegance.
